About Cologne
Cologne is ranked as the 4th largest city in Germany, both according to inhabitants (app. 1 million) and covered area, and is the largest city in the province of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is renowned for its 2,000 years of history, its cultural and architectural heritage as well as its internationally significant events.
That way, the city turned into an important place of commerce. These days it is the traffic junction with the most train traffic volume and its “Eifeltor” is the largest container and cargo transfer station within Germany.
The Cologne Cathedral (declared an UNESCO world heritage site in 1996) is the main landmark of the city and is the most visited sight within Germany.
Cologne is internationally acknowledged as a centre of economy and culture. It is also one of the leading places in the international art trade.
A stronghold of carnival, Cologne is also the domicile of many organizations and a media metropolis with numerous television stations, record labels, and publishing houses.
There are app. 43,000 students enrolled in the city?s main university, placing it among the largest universities of Germany, and there are 16,500 students studying at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, which is therefore the largest one in Germany. There are even several more universities in the city.
